Five years ago, in the former worker's paradise of East Berlin, ten young people rented half of an old hangar and created a commune and co working space. They built offices and workshops, welcomed new members and hosted wild parties and, today, stand as one of the leading artist communities in the city. They boast carpenters, Metal workers, Multimedia artists, a guy who builds kayaks, twins who build bikes and so much more. They also put out a monthly web publication with illustrations, stories and poetry...

KAOS

COVER OCT 2018

cover for Der Kaos Newsletter celebrating the mini home craze sweeping Berlin. I thought and decided the only mini home I could connect with is one I can pull with my bike. only then will it be self sufficient. the character on the bike, along with the Dog on the porch create movement and the use of perspective adds depth when placed by the title.

COVER DEC 2018

cover for Der Kaos Newsletter featuring a recurring character and her dogs. this lady actualy has seven dogs but I felt this would be too much for this image. After all, what can you do with seven dogs that you can't do with four? (Other than pull a dog sled).

ILLUSTRATION OCT 2018

An illustration for an article dealing with berlins public transport and the many characters one can find there. the character is based on a sketch I did of a real commuter.

COVER NOV 2018

cover for Der Kaos Newsletter announcing the Makers Fair, an event where various workshops and collectives present their projects. It seemed to me, the best way to explain the concept was through a completely redundant use of technology. the craftsman created a robot to perform a simple, single task. It probably took him longer to build the robot than it would have taken to paint the sign himself but that isn't the point of creating something new. I feel in my element when working with three tones of color with a fourth color gaining all the attention.

COVER JAN 2019

cover for Der Kaos Newsletter cellebrating one of the recuring characters who regularly visit the commune. Sometimes, he's gone for weeks, sometimes he's there every day.

ILLUSTRATION OCT 2018

A random illustration for the back pages. based off of a sketch of one of the members of the community. the erection and the content of his thoughts are pure artistic license.

BORDER HOPPER'S BEER LABEL

in a half hidden corner of the co working space, are two guys from vastly different places with vastly similar personalities who started a microbrewery and make some of the finest craft beer I have ever tasted. Joe is blond, smallish and from the USA. Waleed is black haired, huge and from Syria, when they're not passed out after a solid weekend of partying, they're plying their craft, making and bottling their beer. This is a label I designed for their brand "Border Hoppers". the black and white look is integral to their image as a street brand. the two characters both have similar bodies and heads the shape of key holes but one of the key holes is upside down. the two complete each other in the illustration just as they do in reality.
