ARCHETYPES
In this story, I deal with the powerful male archetypes we men are presented with and expected to live up to. Growing up, I had a father who was serious, humorless, responsible and successful. He didn't spend much time with me and, as a result, he became an immaculate, almost godlike figure. More importantly, he became a two dimensional archetype which couldn't possibly exist in reality.
When my son was born, my inability to emulate this all powerful superman I had created plunged me into despair. I couldn't be the way I perceived him, the pillar of strength, the good provider. I felt like a failure right out the gate.
The four archetypes tormenting the main character are represented by flat wooden cut outs. only once he gives vent to his feelings, does the main character tear them down and win his freedom. in the final page, the child he is protecting begins to see him as another one of the flat Archetypes. this encapsulates my fear creating the same image of myself in his eyes.
